Josh Dallas Interview

Talks about his new hit show, One Upon a Time, Thor 2, and more

Katrina- How did you end up playing Prince Charming?

Josh- I got a call from my agent and they said there was this pilot script out there called "Once Upon a Time", and I read it and I thought it was one of the most unique television scripts I certainly have ever read for network television. So I thought I gotta be part of this. I went in and met the guys and then a couple days later I was cast as their Prince Charming.

Katrina- I know that Ginnifer Goodwin had said she always wanted to be a Disney Princess; did you ever want to be a Prince when you were a kid?

Josh- Well yeah…I think every young boy dreams of being a prince; at least dreams of having a sword and riding horses, fighting trolls and goblins and dragons and things like that.

Katrina- I know that you have background in theater. Did that help in playing Charming at all?

Josh- Well I don’t know if it helps specifically in playing Charming, but I think it helps in terms of acting anything really. It gives you a great kind of foundation and work ethic in how you approach characters and things like that.

Katrina- You were in London for a quite a while. I heard that as soon as you got back to the States you were offered Fandral in Thor?

Josh- Yeah, that’s right. I lived in London for almost 11 years. London is an awesome city and it’s been my home for a long long time. And I thought I really want to go back to the States. So I came back to LA and it was like 5 days later I got the call they wanted to offer me the part of Fandral in Thor. And I was like ‘Ok. This is a nice introduction back home and I’m not gonna go back.

Katrina- Has anyone spoken to you about the sequel yet?

Josh- Yeah, they have. It’s in the works. Obviously we start shooting sometime next year. I think we’re actually going to be shooting in London…So it’s happening…I don’t know what adventures Thor and his comrades are going to be going on yet, because I haven’t read the script for it. But I know it’s in the works and Don Payne is writing away somewhere locked in some room no doubt. It’s exciting I can’t wait to go on more adventures in Asgard.

Katrina- Yeah, I can’t wait to see it. I loved Thor so much I saw it 3 times in the theater.

Josh- Thank you so much! I think it’s a great movie. I think Chris is fantastic as Thor. He’s the perfect embodiment of that character. I think Ken Branagh did an amazing job in flushing out the story- the relationships between these characters, between particularly Loki and Thor and Odin. I think he kind of really created that world for us. It’s a shame he’s not coming back as the director, but Patty Jenkins no doubt will be able to tell in incredible story.

Katrina- I’ve been reading comic books for a very long time and I think everyone did a really great job in the movie.

Josh- Cool! It’s got amazing, amazing characters throughout Thor…I think with what Ken and what Marvel did with the movie it made such a perfect transition from the comic book to something very cinematic. I loved the movie and I think it’s great too so I’m glad you liked it.

Katrina- Oh I loved it. Getting back to Once Upon a Time, you and Ginnifer have great chemistry on the show. Cinderella had always been my favorite fairy tale, but after you came out of the coma, and I saw that the preview for the next episode was about Cinderella and not about you guys, I was like, No! Get back to Charming and Snow White.

Josh- Well that’s very kind of you. I’m glad that you’re into the Snow and Charming story and their epic love that they have for each other. Don’t worry we will be back. I guess we gotta feed it to you like a treat. We can’t give you too much.

Katrina- Right well actually I thought you guys were gonna drag it out more; I wasn’t expecting you to come out that coma that quick.

Josh- Well, remember Storybrook is where we’re all cursed. There’s lots of obstacles that will become more and more clear as the episodes come out. That’s the whole thing about Storybrook is that is where we go for the curse and where the happy endings are kept away from us. Our characters in Storybrook are constantly searching for that. Subconsciously, because they obviously have no memory of who they were or who they are. So that happy ending is so close yet so far away.

Katrina- Now how close will be the relationship between Mary Margret and David though in the next coming episodes? Will we see something before the year is out?

Josh- Oh for sure! You will definitely see a relationship of some kind building. There is definitely a connection between the two, a very strong connection.

Katrina- Now this Kathryn woman that claimed to be David’s wife, now is this marriage going to be a sham? Because it seemed kind of shady to me.

Josh- I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say. I will say that it may or may not be a real part of David’s past.

Katrina- Do you prefer playing David or the Prince?

Josh- I love playing both characters. I think it’s hard playing David…I mean it’s not hard, but it’s certainly a challenge. And it’s not a nice place to be as an actor or as a character, because Storybrook is a place where as I said happy endings are stripped away. He’s a very conflicted man. He’s very confused. He’s fighting being true to memories that he thinks he should have, and also being true to feelings and emotions that he’s having at the moment. That are real and conflicting to the memories that he’s supposed to have. So it’s difficult and it’s not always a fun place to be as an actor certainly playing David, because Its conflicting, its dark, it’s sad. It’s not fun to be in a place where you’re playing a man who is in many words the opposite to Charming. Because Charming is confident and knows who he is as a man, has a sense of purpose about him. And David is…lost. Lost in trying to figure out in where he belongs and what his true identity is…he’s a man with a lot of questions marks, which is frustrating; it’s frustrating for him, and it’s frustrating as an actor to play him. It’s always fun to of course to play Charming and be that confident man that he is and be able to kind of run with that. But David is certainly conflicted, but it’s fun playing both for sure as an actor. And that’s what’s so great for all of as actors to be on this show. Which is unique because we’re playing all these different characters; we’re playing essentially 2 different characters that are the same person but they have different experiences as characters…which changes them. So it’s a joy, it’s like hitting the jackpot as an actor to be able to play these different sides all the time.

Katrina- What’s the atmosphere like on the set? Does it feel like another acting job or does it feel like you’re playing make believe with these fairy tales stories?

Josh- It certainly doesn’t feel like another acting job. It’s something that feels very special for us. Everyone involved from the crew, from the directors, the entire cast, everybody is top notch in bringing their A game every day. And because we love it, everyone is so passionate about it. So it certainly doesn’t feel like just another acting job. And as far as feeling like we’re just playing make believe in fairy tale land, I don’t think we feel that. I think we feel whether it’s in Fairy Tale Land or in Storybrook it’s all a real reality. So we’re all playing very real characters. Hopefully making them real and complex just like people are in real life; whether we’re Charming, or David, or Snow White, or Mary Margret or whatever. The Charming and Snow White love story of that is very real, and we wanted to make it a very real love, as opposed to something 2 dimensional. We wanted to make it something deeper than that and real. And hopefully we’re doing that.

Katrina- You guys are. Like I said you guys switched me from Cinderella to Snow White and I thought that would never happen.

Josh- Well don’t worry they will be back.

Katrina- What’s the hardest thing you’ve had to do on the show?

Josh- I guess it was 103 (Episode: Snow Falls), I had a lot of sword fighting and kind of bow and arrow action going on in 103 and I remember it was really, really hot in Vancouver. We were out in the woods; I mean beautiful, beautiful part of North Vancouver, and I’m in of course all leather, which doesn’t really breathe, so I was doing a lot of running around, a lot of sword fighting, so there was a lot of sweating going on. It was a brilliant fun incredible day, but it was tough physically.

Katrina- Has anything happened behind the scenes that was really funny, that would be a blooper or end up in a gag reel?

Josh- I’m sure there’s lots of things that happen like that. I can’t remember anything specifically. The thing about it is we’re all so kind of passionate about it, and this is like boring for you because we don’t really have any bloopers I guess...But we’re all kind of so passionate about it and everybody kind of comes in wanting to do the best job they possibly can. So there’s not a lot of kind of big mess ups or anything like that. And Also there’s just not the time…The way network television works…we shoot an episode in 8 days, that’s how long it takes to make an episode, so there’s not a lot of time to kind of mess around. We all have a great time, but there’s not a lot of bloopers that happen, yet anyway.

Katrina- I read that the ratings and the viewership have been great for the show, is a second season already being planned out?

Josh- If it is we haven’t been told about it. Obviously we hope so. We hope people keep tuning in every week and watching us. We love our viewers and we love that they’re loving the show. I’m on twitter and the messages that I get about people loving the show and loving the character and particularly the Snow and Charming story line is so humbling and fantastic. It just feels good that we’re out there doing it and people are loving it. Which is why because of them, because of our viewers...is why we got picked up for a full season. So hopefully everybody stays tuned in to it, and we’ll get a second season out of it. We haven’t been told yet, but fingers crossed.

Katrina- Thanksgiving is next week; do you have any plans for the holiday?

Josh- I am going snow skiing.

Katrina- Now I'm with the Gorgeous Geeks and we are all about showing Geek Pride. Do you have any geeky hobbies or habits?

Josh- I don’t know, what do you consider geeky?

Katrina- I guess the real question is what do you consider geeky?

Josh- I’m sure I probably do. I read comics.

Katrina- Oh you do?

Josh- Yeah, I certainly read comics. I read Thor growing up; I read a lot of Fables, which I think is really super cool. I don’t know, is that geeky? I don’t think that’s geeky.

Katrina- Well, I don’t think it’s geeky either but a lot of people do.

Josh- Then we shall be geeky and proud!

Katrina- Yes, we shall. But that’s great; I didn’t know you read Thor before you got the part of Fandral so that’s really cool.

Josh- Yeah, I read Thor. I read more of Captain America growing up. Thor I kind of dipped in and out of it, I read Captain America more than I did Thor. Since I started this I got into Fables which is a really, really cool series.

Katrina- So did you like the Captain America movie?

Josh- I loved it. I thought Chris Evans was perfect for it. They made a great movie. I think it’s entertaining, it’s fun, it tells a story, and it goes back to the origins. And I think that’s what’s important about all these, when comic book movies come out, like Thor, when the first movie comes out, they really have to make it about the origin of it and talking about where the character has come from and which gets you into the story so much more.

Katrina- Now I’ve said before that I love the show and I tell everyone about it, and I’m actually surprised about how many guys love the show as well.

Josh- I know! I’m hearing more and more about guys, on twitter and stuff-guys that are loving the show. I don’t want to say surprise, but I guess it did kind of surprise me and I’m so glad that they’re tuning in and watching it, because it’s not just for girls, or women, or kids or whatever…we’re just so pleased that we have such a wide scope of viewers and I think it’s pretty cool.

Katrina- But there are still some people out there that hesitant to watch the show because it’s about fairy tales, so what would you say to people that are hesitant to watch the show?

Josh- That it is not your typical fairy tales; I mean it’s all these famous fairy tale characters that we all know, and we’ve all grew up with and we all love. But…we’re telling the story of these characters-the sides that we don’t know. We’re telling all the aspects of these characters that we have never heard before. So it somehow goes deeper. It somehow goes to a different level. And how fantastic! You’re finding out how Snow and Prince Charming, how they met. We’re finding out he got the name Charming. We’re finding out all these great things that we don’t know about these characters that we think we know already. So it’s not just your typical fairy tale.
